Alberto van Klaveren talks about the possible investment opportunities for India in lithium and copper deposits in Chile

Chile's Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren's recent three-day visit to India marks a significant step in deepening bilateral relations between the two nations.
His discussions with India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and other Indian officials covered a broad spectrum of topics, from trade and investment to agriculture, critical minerals, and defense cooperation.
This visit reflects both countries' shared commitment to expanding their partnership, particularly in the context of the evolving global geopolitical landscape.

The two countries are already engaged in robust trade, particularly in minerals like copper and agricultural products such as nuts and wines. However, there is a shared interest in diversifying and expanding these exchanges.
Critical Minerals: Chile is home to vast reserves of lithium and copper, minerals critical to India's growing electric vehicle (EV) industry.
The Chilean government has opened new lithium deposits for international investment, presenting a significant opportunity for Indian companies.
As India pushes forward with its ambitions in electromobility, securing a stable supply of lithium is crucial, and collaboration with Chile could be a key component of this strategy.
Agricultural Trade: Chile's advanced agricultural sector offers numerous avenues for cooperation. The discussions highlighted the potential for India to increase its exports of tropical products like mangoes to Chile, while Chile looks to expand its fruit exports to India, taking advantage of the off-season production cycle due to its location in the southern hemisphere.
Pharmaceuticals and Joint Ventures: India, known for its pharmaceutical exports, could enhance its presence in Chile's medicine market.
There are already existing joint ventures between Indian and Chilean companies, and expanding these collaborations could further solidify India's position in the Latin American market.

India's dynamic defense industry also emerged as a key area of interest. Chile is keen on promoting the participation of Indian defense companies in its defense fairs and developing closer ties between the two countries' defense ministries.
This could lead to increased defense cooperation, including technology transfer and joint ventures.
In addition, discussions on space collaboration underscore the potential for joint initiatives in science and technology, areas where both countries have significant expertise and capabilities.

Chile's balanced approach to its international relations, particularly in navigating tensions between major powers like the United States, China, and the European Union, was another focal point of the discussions.
Chile values its diversified economic and political relations and sees India as a key player in maintaining this balance. India's growing influence in Latin America, particularly as a rising economic power and a positive force in the international system, is welcomed by Chile.

On the Russia-Ukraine conflict, while it was not a primary topic of conversation during the meetings, van Klaveren acknowledged India's potential role as a mediator.
Given India's good relations with both Russia and Ukraine, Chile views India's diplomatic approach as positive and sees India playing a constructive role in seeking a resolution to the conflict.

The discussions also touched on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Chile.
While the formal negotiations are yet to begin, both countries expressed their readiness to advance the process. The finalization of internal consultations and political decisions in India will be crucial in moving forward with this agreement, which could further boost economic ties between the two nations.
