Shah unveils mobile app for birth and death registration
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday (October 29, 2024) launched the Civil Registration System (CRS) mobile application to “integrate technology with governance”.
Highlights:
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Civil Registration System (CRS) mobile app on October 29, 2024, aiming to integrate technology with governance.
- The app allows citizens to register births and deaths digitally anytime, anywhere, and in their State’s official language, streamlining the registration process.
Key Features of the CRS App:
- Seamless Registration: Citizens can now register births and deaths without needing to visit government offices, making the process more accessible and efficient.
- Digital Birth Certificates: Birth certificates issued via the app will serve as a single document for proof of date of birth, usable for admissions, government jobs, and marriage registration.
Legislative Backing and Database Integration:
- Under the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2023, all births and deaths reported from October 1, 2023, must be digitally registered on the central portal (dc.crsorgi.gov.in).
- The centralized data will support updates to key government databases, such as the National Population Register (NPR), ration cards, property registrations, and electoral rolls.
National Population Register (NPR) and Citizenship Context:
- Data for the NPR was initially collected in 2010 and updated in 2015, covering around 119 crore residents. NPR forms the basis for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) as outlined in the Citizenship Act.
Unveiling of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s Statue:
- Alongside the app launch, Mr. Shah unveiled a statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at the Census Building in New Delhi, honoring Patel's role in unifying the nation.
